6 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR YOUR CHILD'S FIRST MARTIAL ARTS CLASS

August 19, 2018

Congratulations! Your child will now be able to learn martial arts and embark on a spectacular journey of self-discovery and character development by developing a strong inner sense of self-discipline and physical strength through martial arts classes. These qualities will remain with them throughout their lives, as they grow into responsible adults and established figures in their respective communities.

Today we’re sharing some useful tips and reminders that will help you prepare your child for their first day of martial arts classes.

1. Book your child in the correct karate class.

Our general advice would be that you make sure you’ve booked your child in the correct session. Make sure there is ample time to get to and from the classes if the center is more than a 10-minute drive from your residence. We would also suggest that you not schedule any other physically challenging activities on the same day as their first lesson. This will give them the extra time to get to know their peers and teachers better.

2. Build enthusiasm by discussing karate with your child.

Your son or daughter may have already been exposed to martial arts in some form or another before their first class. But if a significant amount of time has passed since that incidence or your child is completely new to the practice, it’s a great idea to mentally prepare your child for their martial arts classes. You can easily do this by simply talking to them about the art or browsing the web for videos of children enjoying their classes.

3. Dress right for the first karate class.

If they haven’t gotten their karate gear already, most children will be wearing track pants and a comfortable t-shirt to their first martial arts class. Even the act of picking out their outfit for the big day in advance together can help build enthusiasm for their first karate kids lesson.

Learning how to correctly put your uniform on and tie your belt can be a little daunting for any new student.  Our instructors are more than happy to teach not only your child, but also you as the parent, the correct way to keep that belt tied so it won’t fall off.

4. Being nervous is okay.

Let’s face it – everyone gets nervous their first time doing anything. That shouldn’t be any different for your child. Remember that they’re going into a totally new environment different from what they’re used to. They’ll be dressed differently, see many different faces and will have a new authority figure. It’s okay for them to be nervous.

5. Encourage but don’t push.

Many parents are guilty of it. It’s natural to want your child in excel in everything they do. But there’s a thin line between healthy encouragement and pushing beyond reason. Remember that what your child may have seen on TV is very different from what they’ll experience in real life. It’s the same with martial arts classes. Yes, they see many cool techniques and moves, but most of those techniques take time to learn and perfect.

6. Be a cheerleader.

It’s as simple as is sounds. Be a cheerleader for your child during and after class. Provide praise when things are done correctly and provide encouragement when they need a little boost. Remember that your child wants to please you in every way possible, especially during their martial arts classes. They are “on stage” and want you to be proud of them.

Healthy encouragement is key, and cheering them on will lead them to succeed – that’s how to prepare your child for their martial arts class. Their first class may be frightening for them, but after a few times, it will be all fun. Ready to get started with your child? Call or stop by today and we’ll be happy to show you around!
